#ReclaimOurSchools: A Week of Actions

Date Posted:

Several weeks ago, Paul Pecorale (NYSUT Vice President and Long Island native) called on local leaders and NYSUT members to commit to participating in the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools nationwide Day of Action on January 19, 2017. The purpose is to protect our students, public K-12 and higher-education institutions, and our communities.

We are in!

The BSCTA can accomplish just about anything when our members, working with parents and the community, stand together to protect what’s right. We don't have to look far back to ring true this statement. Our association has received plenty of praise for the superb work that was done to help re-elect Phil Ramos back in November working together with NYSUT and several other local associations. The community also came together with teachers and politicians to support public education when the LICA (charter school) was proposed in our area. Below are directions on calling your legislators and some actions that BSCTA will be taking part in.

We will use 1/17-1/19 for local action that has meaning for our JOBS, school, and community.

Tuesday 1/17 and/or Wednesday 1/18:

The confirmation hearings for Betsy DeVos will happen shortly. Please call or visit your senators this week and let them know you oppose her appointment as Secretary of Education. If you called already, please call again. It is most effective to call or visit a local office. Below is the list of local office locations.

We are asking that every one of you make a phone call to both Gillibrand and Schumer at some point during this time frame. It should take less than 5 minutes. If you want a script, you can find it at the end of this post along with address and phone numbers.

Rally on Thursday 1/19:

Show of support for public education at the BSCTA office on Thursday, January 19th, 2017 - one day before Trump’s inauguration. Staging starts at 2:30 with a rally of speakers from the community and other unions from education, the building trades and the public sector.

Phone Call Script Option 1

"Hello, my name is _________ and I am calling to let the Senator know that I would hi/her to oppose the appointment of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education. I believe in my community’s public schools. Betsy DeVos believes in school privatization and vouchers.  She has worked to undermine efforts to regulate Michigan charters, even when they clearly fail.  The “marketplace” solution of DeVos will destroy our democratically governed community schools.  Her hostility towards public schools disqualifies her.  I am asking the Senator to vote against the confirmation of Betsy DeVos."

Script Option 2

"Hello, my name is _______ and I am calling to let the Senator konw that I would like him/her to oppose the appointment of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Edcuation. DeVos and her family heavily lobbied the Michigan legislature to shield the charter industry from greater oversight.  She pushes for-profic charter schools and online schools, which consistently fail the students that they are supposed to serve. I want my tax dollars to stay in my community to support my public schools. I don’t want my money going to private schools and profit making scams.  Betsy DeVos is bad for American education.  I am asking that the Senator oppose DeVos."
