We hope this message finds you and your family safe and healthy.  Once again, we want you to know that you are not alone in this brand new journey of distance learning.  We are all in this together and we want to thank you for all of the hard work and professionalism that you continue to demonstrate during this national emergency.  Here are some of the most recent union and education updates:
  • Donations - The BSCTA Executive Board held a (virtual) meeting this week to explore a variety of topics.  One of the items that was discussed was the idea of forgoing the teacher appreciation gifts for this May and donating the money to a variety of people in need.  As you remember from last year, we donated money to Amore Pizza in Bay Shore to assist one of their co-owners in need. This year, we have decided to make a $500 donation to the Long Island Cares food pantry to help feed our needy students and their families.  In addition, we have donated $250 to purchase food for the employees working at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore and $250 to the NYSUT Disaster Relief Fund, which will go directly toward purchasing and providing Personal Protective Equipment, food and other supplies for all of our dedicated health care workers throughout the area.  These donations will also help keep our local restaurants afloat, as the food will be purchased from businesses in Bay Shore and Islip.
  • SOCE/Grades 7-12 Special Education teachers:  The time period to complete the NYS requirements has been extended until June 30, 2021. Click here for more information.
  • NYS Teachers' Retirement System - If you don't have a NYSTRS account, then this is a good time to create one online atwww.nystrs.org **Review who you selected as your beneficiary, as sometimes life experiences may require you to make a change or two.
  • Health Emergency - We hope this doesn't come into play, however, if you become seriously ill, please contact us immediately.  We will provide you with information regarding potential protections for you and your family through the NYS Teachers' Retirement System.
We hope that you have a great Friday, and Happy Passover/Happy Easter to all who are celebrating.
Stay well.
